On Monday we officially split into our two groups for Comedy Studies. These will be the the groups that we will do our final revues with. The split is a double-edged sword. The good part is that the classes are smaller, more personal, and I’m very quickly becoming closer with the kids I’ll be writing and performing in. The bad part is that I don’t get to see the Group 2 kids as much. No worries though, that’s what rooftop drinking is for.
I’ve been exhausted after class. This is probably due to several reasons. 1. It’s from 10-4. Being used to maybe half that amount of class (on a bad day) at Tufts, this can get a little tiring. 2. We’re constantly performing. The classes involve very little amounts of staying still, so we’re always on the move. This takes the form of doing mime work, improv scenes, acting exercises, whatever. The point is, I’m remembering what naps feel like. I’ve generally been a nap fan, even though I did it rarely in high school. College re-introduced me to the whole nap thing. The only problem with naps is that despite how much you want one because you’re sleepy, you never wake up feeling refreshed (or at least I don’t.) For me, I’m decently groggy, and it takes me another 20 minutes to really get back to speed. Here’s the kicker though: Naps are still awesome. That hour leading up to the nap, where you’re really excited to nap, and you imagine how refreshed you’ll feel, totally outwieghs the inevitable groginess.
I’ll be seeing the free improv set at Second City tonight. This is part of a policy that a lot of the kids in the program have adopted of using the city wisely. We’re only here for a few months and it’ll start to get cold sooner rather than later. If there’s stuff to be done in the city, we’re gonna do it. A bunch of us are seeing T.J. and Dave tomorrow night, and this weekend is Applefest. I like apples (although I don’t know if I like them enough to devote an entire fest to them) but it’s a thing, and it will allow me to explore, so I think I’m gonna go. I’m determined to get the most out of my experience here, and the city itself is included in that. Also, when people ask me about Chicago things, I want to be able to tell them more than the location of my apartment.
